1.3    The College’s basic values

Rogaland College for Social Educators is a diaconal college. A recurring feature of these colleges is that they consider their activities as originating from and associated with the world’s diaconal work. Diaconia can be understood as the Church’s humanitarian care and its work of developing fellowship, and also includes services especially directed towards those in need.

It is important for a diaconal college to give priority to and to profile the professional acitivities related to this basic understanding of self. The diaconal work of the Church is built on a set of values which the College also wishes to convey and stand for. The diaconal colleges in Norway have compiled a resource document which can be used to provide the Colleges with a profile. Our study programme is based on the resource document in order to emphasise the diaconal perspective in both the theoretical and the practical teaching. The resource document contains its own subject plan which shows the total content of the diaconal part. The main themes in the plan are Philosophy of life and Ethics (parts 1 and 2), Religious Studies, Diaconia, and Spiritual Guidance. These subjects are included in different ways in the College’s ordinary training programme with the exception of Religious Studies which is given as an additional option.
